The focus farms concluded in April/May 2016. The insights and information from the focus farms are now being used to develop agreed knowledge, tools and resources on heifer management.
Focus Farm Field Day Handouts
Heifer Grazing Project
The Heifer Grazing Project aims to improve the growth of young stock, in-calf rates and the dairy farmer-grazier relationship.
The project is led by DairyNZ in collaboration with dairy farmers, graziers, grazing companies, vets, Beef + Lamb and LIC.
The project was launched in December 2014 after an LIC study of more than 105,000 animals showed 73 percent were more than five percent underweight at 22 months old. In 2014 LIC reviewed more recent data that demonstrated that the number of animals not achieving target liveweight at 22 months old has declined to 59 percent.
As part of the project four focus farms identified a variety of practices that farmers could implement to achieve heifer liveweight targets and to improve the national 6-week in-calf rate.
