Sustainable dairying is about balancing profitability with environmental responsibility. This is the thinking guiding DairyNZ's efforts in our work with farmers and industry partners to find environmental solutions that are practical and work on-farm, while reducing farmers' costs, and improving their efficiency and productivity.
| Activity | Objective | Benefit |
| Increasing the sustainability of dairy farming. | Develop on-farm environmental management diagnostic and measurement tools. Encourage farmers to use them, particularly those in priority catchments. | Freedom to operate. A reduction of just 5% in allowable farming is estimated to cost dairy farmers $440 million in direct income and the NZ economy possibly up to five times this amount. |
| Reducing Greenhouse gas emissions | Develop tools and technologiesto reduce methane and nitrous oxide emissions from pastoral farming systems. Develop farm systems designed to address climate change. | Reduce the need for NZ to buy carbon credits – potential saving for NZ of up to $300 million. It is likely that farmers would bear this cost. |
