Feed Production Investment Priorities 2009-15

1st Year Investment: $5.6 million

Proportion of Levy: 10%

New Zealand's unique competitive advantage is based on its low cost, pasture-based farming systems. DairyNZ is focused on achieving profitable and sustainable farming systems through improving the quality and amount of feed dairy farmers grow, matching feed supply with demand, and improving efficiency with which feed is converted into milksolids.

Activity

Objective

Benefit

Increasing quality and quantity of feed production

Better yielding pastures - 25 tonnes dry

matter/ha/p.a

Forage crops - 45 tonnes dry matter/ha/p.a

Develop grazed forage with increased quality to enhance

cow production

Increasing pasture dry matter harvested by just 1 t/ha can lead to an increase in a farm's production of 70 kgMS or $350-$450/ha.

Increasing the number of farmers using existing technologies

Achieve a 50% increase in pasture eaten per hectare by 2015.

If this was achieved it could result in a 50% increase in milksolids production

Developing pasture measurement and management tools

More time efficient measurement of pasture

Higher quality information for pasture management and an increase in labour savings.
