Milking automation, interactions between people and cattle and effects on handle-ability and performance; cow learning; milking practices; integration of automation in dairy farm systems; animal behaviour; information and animal monitoring technologies.

Key accomplishments

  • Industry: Significant contribution to the development of NZ’s first farming operation incorporating automatic milking systems (Greenfield Project). Extensive involvement in extension of automatic milking outcomes and raising profile of opportunities for pastoral dairying. Preparation of technical report for the Dairy Industry People Capability Review Group: Industry requirements for people and skills. Report for Animals Review.
  • Science: Specialist in pastoral automatic milking systems; publication of patented novel farm system for automatic milking in pastoral dairy farms. Demonstration of learning ability of dairy cattle in particular selective attention/use of visual queues.
  • Awards: Finalist “The KuDos” Hamilton Science Awards, Agricultural Scientist (2007); New Zealand Society of Animal Production Innovation Award (2007 & 2004); New Zealand Society of Animal Production Animal Science Award (2004); FRST Post-doctoral Fellowship (1999-2000); Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Fellowship (1998); University of Waikato PhD Scholarship (1994-1997); New Zealand Society of Animal Production Youngs Members Award (1997); ANZCCART Student Award (1994); Heinhold Meat Research Award (1992 & 1993); Ron Kilgour Memorial Travel Award (1993); DSIR Women's Study Award (1989-1991).
