InCalf Adviser Training Course
The InCalf Adviser Training Course trains veterinarians, consultants, herd improvement field staff, extension officers and other advisers in the use of the latest InCalf information, resources and tools to help farmers improve their herd reproductive performance.
The next course is yet to be scheduled. |
Why is InCalf providing training to advisers?
If New Zealand dairy farmers are to reverse the 15 year trend of deteriorated herd reproductive performance, they need to be supported by professionals able to utilise the full suite of InCalf tools and resources.
In May and June 2008, two Australian trainers - former InCalf project leader Steve Little and veterinarian Peter Younis, from South-West Victoria - delivered the first pilot of the InCalf Adviser Training Course to an invitation group of vets and consultants from across New Zealand.
These Aussie trainers showed a thorough knowledge of InCalf and found surprising similarities in the reproductive challenges being faced by advisers in New Zealand herds. They also see immediate relevance of the InCalf programme to the New Zealand dairy industry and to advisers supporting dairy farmers.
This course introduces advisers to the InCalf Herd Assessment Pack tools and a case study approach using these tools to explore herd situations, examining the scope for improvement and identifying the best options for change.
While adapted for New Zealand conditions, the 25 course participants were enthusiastic about this first pilot course and would strongly recommend it to other rural professionals.
DairyNZ is now offering Adviser Training Courses to New Zealand dairy advisers.
Five courses ran in 2008, three in North Island and two in the South Island for around 125 advisers.
Another three courses have been fully subscribed in 2009 at Hamilton in February; Palmerston North in April and in Rotorua in November. More courses will be held in 2010 depending on demand in different locations.
During day three, participants report back on their practical experience on-farm using InCalf tools to address reproductive management challenges.
The courses are limited to 25 participants for each course and registrations are accepted on a first in basis. The fee is $750 including GST per participant.
Registrations of interest for upcoming training courses in the North Island and South Island are welcome.
InCalf in New Zealand is supported by MAF Sustainable Farming Fund.
