Investment: Community impact
2007/08

The image of the dairy industry needs to be promoted to enhance public opinion, particularly around issues such as the environment and on-farm working conditions. DairyNZ is working to promote the benefits of the industry to the wider community, educate the public about dairying's environmental impact and show them the work New Zealand dairy farmers are doing to improve the sustainability of their farm business.

Below is a summary of projects carried out by DairyNZ during the 2007/08 season in the Community Impact area.
Note: These were proposed contracted amounts. Actual final paid amounts may vary from these numbers

Let's Talk Dairying

DairyNZ's dairy industry promotion campaign has a two-pronged approach. It aims to change public perceptions about the dairy industry and secondly, attract people into dairy farming.
The six-week GO Dairy campaign targets skilled people aged 25-40 who are looking for a better lifestyle for their families as well as a rewarding career path. The advertisements feature real dairy farmers.
Last year's successful campaign helped identify more than 650 suitable dairy career candidates and was strongly supported by New Zealand dairy farmers.

IDF project

The International Dairying Federation (IDF NZ) is the national body within New Zealand responsible for coordinating and managing New Zealand dairy industry input and influence on all issues relating to the IDF.
The main purpose of New Zealand's input into IDF is to ensure the New Zealand dairy industry has the ability to have impact and influence on IDF initiatives and issues. While much of the work is reactive and related to risk management, the IDF does deliver significant value to New Zealand dairy farmers.
It is important that the New Zealand dairy industry is able to significantly influence the IDF because of the role IDF has in coordinating global dairy industry input into the establishment and modification of food standards, methods of analysis and various policies, guidelines and practices in a wide range of areas, such as good farming practices, environment, food assurance, milk and product composition. Such standards, policies and guidelines can and have had a significant effect on the ability of the New Zealand dairy industry to operate in the global marketplace.
