Farmfacts: Farmfact Tail painting
(2-7)

Last updated: August 2006

Summary: Accurate heat detection is essential. Correct use of tail painting identifies almost 90% of cows on heat.

Tail painting picks up cows which are only on heat for a short time and would otherwise be missed. Every missed heat costs an average 25kg milksolids (14.7kg milkfat) in lost production alone (21 days x 1.2kg milksolids = 25kg milksolids).
