Last updated: August 2006 Summary: Newborn calves must receive 2-3 litres new colostrum within six hours of birth. There is little to be gained from leaving calves with cows longer than 24 hours. Young calves must have access to warm, dry and draught-free shelter. Fresh water and good quality hay should be made available to calves within four days after birth.
