Farmfacts: Fertiliser value of
effluent (6-15)

Last updated: August 2006

Summary: Dairy farm effluent offers a source of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulphur (S), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na) and trace elements to increase pasture or crop production. It is also slightly alkaline (pH 8.0 to 8.5), so may reduce the need for lime.

The amount of nutrients captured will vary from farm to farm, depending on the farm system and will even vary throughout the season on a single farm. The longer the cows spend on the dairy shed yard and feedpad, the higher the amount of nutrients captured. The amount and type of feed the cows get will also alter the amounts.
