Farmfacts: Nitrogen fertilisers
(7-2)

Last updated: October 2008

Summary: Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for plant and animal growth. This Farmfact covers the different nitrogen fertilisers and cost.

Chemically manufactured ammonia forms the basis for the production of most N fertilisers. Farm dairy effluent also contains high levels of nutrients including N and potassium (K), making it a valuable fertiliser. The N content will depend on a number of factors including the dry matter content, feed type and effluent treatment system.
