Farmfacts: Lime and liming (7-5)

Last updated: August 2006

Summary: The major effect of lime is to increase soil pH (i.e. decrease soil acidity). Liming to optimum levels will increase pasture production due to:

  • Decreased aluminium and manganese toxicity
  • Better water absorption by soil
  • Increased earthworm and micro-organism activity
  • Improved nutrient cycling, especially nitrogen
  • Increased availability of molybdenum (Mo).

Liming to pH greater than optimum levels will:

  • Possibly cause deficiencies of zinc, copper, manganese and boron
  • Possibly cause increased water logging in heavy soils.
