Farmfacts: Reducing the
environmental impact of fertiliser (7-10)

Last updated: September 2006

Summary: The addition of nutrients and a healthy, fertile soil is essential to maintain or improve farm productivity. However the mismanagement of nutrients can have adverse affects, both on farm profitability and the environment.

Sustainable farming occurs where there is a balance between financial and environmental issues, where farming will not be sustainable if natural resources are degraded for profit, or if environmental concerns outweigh profitability.

Why is phosphorus and nitrogen a problem? The loss of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) to the environment can have a large effect on water quality.
