Farmfacts: Riparian management
(5-7)

Last updated: September 2006

Summary: Riparian zones are the strips of land next to waterways. On most dairy farms they will be next to rivers and streams but may also include flood plains, wetlands or swamps, and can include coastal regions.

Sensible riparian management can prevent stream bank erosion which may undermine fences and erode away productive land. By keeping vegetation next to waterways and planting trees, pollution of groundwater and streams is prevented as plants control run-off containing sediment, fertlisers and other pollutants.

To best influence rivers through riparian management - manage conditions upstream.
