Farmfacts: Efficient irrigation
(8-5)

Last updated: September 2006

Summary: The aim of irrigation is to make sure that there is always enough water available to plants in the soil for pasture growth to continue at the maximum rate.

The golden rule is to start before you have to - while soil moisture levels are still well above the critical deficit. Avoid loss of more than 60% of the available water. For general purposes, the trigger level to start irrigation is when about half the maximum plant available water has been used up.
