Animals: OAD in early
lactation

Consider the costs and benefits carefully before deciding to milk once-a-day (OAD) in early lactation.

Recent research undertaken by DairyNZ has challenged views that short periods of OAD milking in early lactation have little effect on milksolids yield while improving cow reproduction.

OAD milking has become popular in early lactation to allow farmers to get systems in place to manage springers, colostrum cows, calves, animal recording, difficult weather conditions and a shortage of labour during this time. These are valid reasons to milk cows OAD in early lactation, however the DairyNZ research has shown is that even short periods (3-6 weeks) of OAD milking has significant milk production costs, with no effect on body condition score (BCS) loss, or reproduction...Read More

DairyNZ advises farmers considering milking OAD in early lactation to be cautious and to consider the full affects of milking OAD in your farm situation carefully. OAD is an option in spring ... but it comes at cost.

Summary of:
Pros
No effect
Cons
  • Helps me and my staff with:
    • Springers
    • Colostrum cows
    • Calves
    • Animal recording.
  • Minimises the effect of a shortage of labour in spring.
  • Reduces pressure on the farm during periods of adverse weather.
  • It does not improve BCS loss
  • It does not improve reproductive performance in:
    • Submissions
    • 3 or 6 week in-calf rates
    • Final empty rate.
  • It reduces MS production:
Cows milked OAD for 3 weeks in early lactation will produce 7% less milk than those milked TAD. Herd milksolid (MS) production for the full season will be down 4.2% vs. those milked TAD
  • Cows milked OAD for 6 weeks in early lactation will produce 12% less MS per year than those milked TAD
  • A feed restriction during this period will increase the negative milk production effect by 50%
    • There will be additional costs should more feed be purchased to minimise this production loss
