A Farmer's Guide To Managing Farm Dairy Effluent

A good practice guide to land application, for farm owners, sharemilkers, farm managers and effluent professionals. The guide incorporates all of the latest research including the soil classification matrix and solids separation; as well as new tools such as the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator, and the FDE Spreading Calculator.

The guide introduces topics previously not covered by the older regional guides, such as managing staff and contractors, and health and safety around the effluent system; as well as linking readers to other resources.

Compliance requirements for each region can now be found in the Compliance Checklists. Some of the more recently published regional guides will remain available for order while stocks last.

Keep It Low Calendar 2013

DairyNZ's Keep It Low campaign was created to remind farmers to irrigate in the drier months, when conditions allow, and to get effluent ponds as empty as possible before winter.

These are summarised in the 2013 Keep It Low Calendar.

A staff guide to operating your effluent irrigation system - Low rate system

Understanding how to operate your effluent irrigation system properly is an essential task on farm.

This booklet helps take farm staff through the important parts of operating and maintaining a low rate effluent system.

The book can be used as a training guide for those who are new to low rate pod systems, or for staff who are new to the farm to introduce them to the farm's effluent practices and policies.

DairyNZ Farm Dairy Effluent (FDE) Spreading CalculatorUse to calculate the nutrient loading applied when spreading effluent solids or slurries to land. This can be used by farmers and effluent spreading contractors showing details such as the required spreading area and travelling speeds to achieve the desired application of nutrients. It is very simple to use with only three steps required.

The information generated from this calculator can be recorded in the Effluent Spreading Contractor's Communication Form, and given to staff or contractors spreading effluent to land.

Effluent Storage: Working Volume CalculatorThis tool has been developed to assist you calculating the working volumes and true dimensions of a new or existing storage pond or tank. It is an easy to use tool that can quickly give you the measurements required. Results be printed off to show potential clients the dimensions and volumes of the proposed storage. It can be used for square, rectangular or circular facilities. This should be used in combination with the effluent storage volumes generated from the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator or for calculating the working volume of existing ponds or tanks.

Effluent spreading contractor communications form

To help reduce communication breakdowns between farmers and effluent spreading contractors, a form has been added to the DairyNZ Compliance Toolkit. The online printable form records information such as the pond liner type, hazards present, areas to avoid applying effluent to, which paddocks/areas to apply the solids and the depths or rates to apply the solids at.
