Summary: Swedes are normally used as a winter feed crop. They have a low tolerance to drought and
perform best in cooler moist environments. Avoid light soils with low water holding capacity or heavy, poorly drained soils. Swedes are susceptible to club root (soil borne) and dry rot (air borne) and are therefore a first year cropping option only. Swedes must never be established as a second crop after any other brassica crop. Swedes are usually sown from mid-November to end of December to produce large amounts of high quality feed which is carried over for winter grazing.
