- Book consultation with vet to decide best management approach for rising two-year-olds (replacement heifers)
- Monitor weights of young stock and ensure they are meeting their growth targets
- If using a grazier, regularly visit to ensure there is sufficient feed and/or supplement available
- Pregnancy test and remove empties
- Ensure vaccinations are up to date and don't forget clostridial/leptospirosis booster vaccinations to get them in sync with the main herd
- Use the formula in the DairyNZ InCalf Book "Expected mature liveweight = 503 kg + Lwt BV" to estimate weight-for-age targets for your heifers:
- 30% of mature liveweight by 6
months
- 60% of mature liveweight by 15 months
(pre-mating)
- 90% of mature liveweight by 22 months
(pre-calving).
