Improved calf rearing through training and extension of existing knowledge

The aim of the project is to improve the standard of calf rearing and reduce potential welfare issues within the NZ dairy industry.

The project will enable the training of new staff as well as providing a source of more in-depth knowledge on specific issues for experienced rearers. This will be achieved by providing a readily accessible, independent, practical information source on calf rearing.

Expected outcomes of this project

Benefit

Better reared calves  are healthier and grow better meaning they are more likely to achieve growth targets and be more productive in the milking herd
Reduced risk of animal welfare issues
Reduction in stress on staff through fewer animal health issues during rearing.
