National Animal Identification and Traceability - Management

To provide dairy industry leadership in the National Animal Identification and Traceability (NAIT) development and implementation project.  The project’s objective is to design, build and implement an enhanced animal identification and traceability system to NZ animal agriculture that:

• Improves NZ’s response to a biosecurity incursion
• Allows capture of animal disease surveillance and treatment information
• Provides the basis for enhanced management of endemic diseases
• Provides an additional tool at lowest possible cost for farmers to manage their operations
• Provides domestic and international market assurance of the capability of NZ’s animal traceability system
• Responds to growing consumer interest in traceability of the food they consume; and
• Enhances the ability of meat and dairy processors to both proactively and efficiently manage food safety issues through their Risk Management Programmes as mandated under the Animal Products Act.
