Increasing feed intake of pasture-fed dairy cows

The aim of this project is to increase the productivity of pasture-based dairy systems by developing; (a) perennial ryegrass germplasm with improved intrinsic degradability and (b) novel endophytes that promote degradation of ingested grass, to enhance production performance of dairy cows on grazed pasture.

Expected outcomes of this project

Benefit
This research will support the development of new perennial ryegrass cultivars with intrinsically higher degradability in the rumen.  The primary benefit to New Zealand dairy farmers will be increased production from animals grazed on pastures sown with new genetically improved cultivars.
Novel grass endophytes which improve grass fibre breakdown in the rumen will be developed and delivered by inoculation into commercially available grass cultivars.  The benefit to New Zealand dairy farmers will be increased production from animals grazed on pastures sown with cultivars infected with novel endophytes.
