Biocontrol of major pests of dairy pastures (Formerly: Experimental release of a clover root weevil biocontrol agent)The aim of this project is to improve vigour and persistence of quality pasture through the successful biocontrol of major exotic pasture pest species throughout New Zealand. The focus is on (a) extending the establishment of the clover root weevil biocontrol agent and evaluating its success throughout New Zealand and (b) seeking biocontrols for black beetle and clover flea in vulnerable North Island pastures where poor pasture persistence is a major issue for dairy farmers. Each of these species has existing or planned co-funding support. |
Expected outcomes of this project
Benefit
Improved white clover production levels in pasture will increased milk yields and animal growth
Increased N fixation will reduced need for high N fertiliser application rates and ensure ‘Freedom to Operate’
Reduced pest impact will improved forage yield, quality and persistence
