Herb physiology, persistence and animal response: Using herbs to increase summer feed production and quality to achieve 1750 kg MS/ha

The aim of this project is:

  • To determine the potential dairy cow herb intake in the summer/autumn period when herbs are fed as the predominant proportion of the diet
  • To determine the differences in herb re-growth and quality when grazing intervals and grazing heights are modified
  • To determine the potential of herbs, integrated across a large area of a farm system, to increase milksolids production to 1750kgMS/ha.

Expected outcomes of this project

Benefit
By increasing system summer feed quality, milksolids production per hectare and feed conversion efficiency can be increased
By improving our understanding of chicory and plantain physiology, forage growth and characteristics, cow production can be increased
