National Breeding Objectives – Information Delivery
This project aims to provide, on a regular basis, the most up-to-date genetic information on dairy sires for improvement of farmers’ herds. This is achieved by the continued management, by New Zealand Animal Evaluation Limited (NZAEL), of the National Breeding Objective, which has the goal to “Identify animals whose progeny will be the most efficient converters of feed into farmer profit”. This management entails updating of economic information related to the breeding objective and updating of genetic trait evaluations as new information becomes available for the national genetic evaluation system. |
Expected outcomes of this project
Benefit
Information is provided to AB organisations to enable farmers to maintain rates of genetic gain in line with the National Breeding Objective.
Genetic gain accumulates so that a decade of genetic improvement has net benefit of $0.5 billion to the dairy industry in the tenth year compared to the first year of the decade.
Farmers can use the information provided to exercise choices between the sires offered by breeding companies, based on the genetic characteristics transmitted by individual sires.
Farmers are empowered to follow their own breeding objectives.
