Feed Conversion Efficiency (FCE)The outcome of this project will be increased productivity in the dairy industry through on-farm improvements in the conversion of feed to milksolids. It contributes to the dairy sector by assisting with the supply of low-cost milk to processing companies. New Zealand’s low-cost sustainable systems determine farm profitability and are essential for international competitive advantage. Historical gains, achieved through animal and plant genetics and farm management systems must be advanced to achieve the 40% production increase targeted by the NZ Dairy Industry for 2015. |
Expected outcomes of this project
| Benefit |
| The project will provide enduring productivity gains by improving the feed conversion efficiency at a metabolic level in dairy cows and farm systems devised to ensure the benefits of improved genetics are captured. |
| The high FCE trait will have a widespread distribution through LIC commercialising the genetics. The Animal Evaluation System will incorporate FCE into the genetic index as BW. |
