Improving Cow FertilityThe key objectives are:
Results to date suggest that between 35 and 40% of cows in a well managed herd have prolonged “invisible” uterine infections. These cows have a conception rate of 35% to AI, compared with “clean” cows that have a conception rate of 55%. This has serious negative effects on herd reproduction status, reducing conception rate to first service across the herd to 48%. An effective treatment of this condition will improve on-farm reproductive success. |
Expected outcomes of this project
Benefit
Data collated to date suggest that prolonged sub-clinical uterine infections reduce herd conception rate to first service by more than 5%. An effective treatment has the potential to improve on-farm reproductive performance.
Early identification of cows at risk of sub-clinical uterine infection will support early treatment and recovery from this uterine pathology, thus improving reproductive performance.
Results from this study have potential application to other infectious or inflammatory disorders, such as mastitis.
