NZAEL operation and researchGenetic gain in dairy cattle has a proven track record in delivering higher productivity and profitability to farmers. The NZAEL-governed $BW system provides the industry measure for genetic gain, and this genetic gain is delivered to farmers by bull breeders and the animal breeding companies. Maintaining and improving the $BW system and the underpinning phenotypic data, genetic research and delivery systems is a vital part of achieving the industry targets, especially in profitability and is the focus for this project. |
Expected outcomes of this project
| Benefit |
| Industry level returns from genetic merit are very high (i.e. likely $300 million per annum historically based on current prices and industry estimates of economic weights). |
| An effective delivery system for BW permits efficient implementation of genomic selection schemes, which has the potential to increase industry level returns from genetic improvement to $480 million per annum. |
