Improving Conception Rates in Large South Island HerdsTo improve reproductive performance in large (>500 cows) dairy herds. This will be achieved by providing a tailored management tool to farmers and their advisers for increasing conception rates. The basis of this product will be derived from analyses of large dairy herds to identify the underlying factors depressing conception rates. Improved sustainability through better profit, job satisfaction and cow longevity (reducing the carbon footprint) will be a key outcome. The economic benefit is potentially $172 million per annum. The social benefits include easier management, improved staff retention and easier recruitment. The environmental and welfare benefits are from less reliance on interventions and less cow ‘wastage’. |
Expected outcomes of this project
| Benefit |
Farmers can more accurately assess underlying causes of poor conception rates in their herds. |
| Improved conception rate allows shortened mating length, increased voluntary culling choice, and a tighter calving pattern with less reliance on hormonal intervention. |
| Improved productivity in large herds. |
