Waimana/Opotiki Discussion Group - February

Its been a hot summer, which has had an impact on farm performance. It's easy enough to see how the drying heat has affected pasture performance, but less apparent is the effect hot days have on the cows.

THI (Thermal Heat Index) is an measurement that can be calculated to evaluate what the likely impact on cow welfare and performance might be. Briar McGowan, DairyNZ Animal Care Specialist for the Bay of Plenty region will be on hand to run through what the weather records for this summer have indicated were at-risk periods.
