Selwyn/Waihora Discussion Group - March

DairyNZ Discussion groups in Canterbury/North Otago discuss and investigate the farm system and farm related issues on the host farm, including current topics and upcoming seasonal matters.

First group of the new year and lots to catch up on. Bring your farm team and your neighbour's, everything is more fun with a crowd!

We will start the day with a catch-up as to what is happening around the area before moving onto the host farm.

Mundtville Farm, owned by Selwyn and Raewyn Mundt, milks 1630 A2 cows through two sheds. Jackson Hann, who worked his way up from farm manager is now in his 4th season contract milking.

The farm has wintered on Fodder Beet for the last 12 years and have picked up tips to share over the years to have a stress-free winter on the crop.

They are into their second season with collars on, see what effect this has had on their animal health and reproduction results.

Along with this Selwyn and Jackson are proactive in reducing the farms environmental footprint, especially N leaching, by employing a number of mitigation strategies including plantain and liquid fertiliser – hear how these have made a difference and what this means for meeting the 30% N leaching reduction from baseline timeline coming in 2022.

These and seasonal topics will be discussed on the day! Look forward to seeing you there.
