The Morrinsville North Discussion Group's purpose is to discuss and analyse the host farmer's business and make recommendations to help them achieve their stated goals. Members share and gain seasonal information that is relevant to their own productivity and financial management requirements.
The June group is visiting a Tainui Group owned farm in the Tauhei area contract milked by Gareth Welch and Sarah Brunton.
The farm is challenging with both heavy clay soils on the hills and flats which are prone to poor pasture utilisation in wet conditions and poor pasture growth in summer autumn dry weather. At the discussion group we will discuss how Gareth and Sarah negotiate these conditions including the use of sorghum, maize and chicory summer cropping, stand off facilities, and OAD milking of heifers and colostrum cows.
