Adrian and Pauline Ball have been winter milking for 20 years seeing a number of changes to their farm system. They have been future proofing their farm against risks such as biosecurity, feed price and supply, environmental regulations, climate change and public perception.
Recent changes include aiming to be 100% self sufficient with feed by utilizing a runoff and various crops, rearing all calves (no bobbies), substantial riparian planting along 1.7 km of the Waihou river boundary. While at the same time aiming for 3 days a week off farm and maintaining a highly profitable business.
The Waikato Autumn Calving Focus Group is open to all farmers currently Autumn calving or contemplating autumn calving. This group discusses the specific challenges that autumn calving and winter milk bring.
