The Irwin's run a highly efficient, intensive dairy farm 10 minutes south of Morrinsville.
The key features of this operation are:
- Producing 185,000kgMS from 340 cows on 83ha
- Cows producing approx. 110% of their liveweight in production
- Achieving a very low nitrogen footprint (<25kgN/ha leached)
- Harvesting 14-15tDM/ha from home grown feed
The Irwin's achieve this through good management, and the use of 2 herd homes in a predominantly autumn calving system.
The focus of this group will be to drill into how they achieve the current level of efficiency (particularly environmental) and identifying future opportunities, specifically low/no till maize crops and breeding the right cows for the system.
