The Johnston's are milking 750 cows on 250 hectares. After the years of low milk prices they reviewed their cost structure and farm system to emphasize increasing the amount of feed grown on farm rather than purchase it in.
They are now growing maize, lucerne, summer turnips, and fodder beet on farm. The farm is targeting 500+ milk solids a cow and $4 farm working costs for this season.
