  • Conditions are continuing to dry out through Southland, with stress starting to show in some crops due to lack of moisture, high temperatures, weed and pests.

Summer dry management events have been running throughout Southland, with the last one to be held on Thursday 25th Jan in Otautau.

It is important to remember the following, and if needed, get in touch with your local consulting officer for more information, or go to the DairyNZ website.

Key Management strategies - Have a plan & set some key trigger points

    · Monitor & Communicate the situation – APC, BCS, Grazing

    · Manage BCS – Protect next season and your herd – set targets and stick to them

    - How long does it take to put BCS back on if you strip it off now?

    · Use supplement wisely—make sure some is left for after rain (approx. 100kg/DM/cow if burnt off)

    · Rule of thumb 5% of payout: $6.40 x 0.05 = 32 cents/Kg/DM

The immediate milk response is unlikely to cover cost – but keeping cows in milk for when it does rain.

    · Consider OAD or 16hr milking to take pressure off both staff and cows

    · Culling – Set dates for culls gone, Scanning, Dry off dates

    · Nitrogen application - Use opportunity to grow as much as possible and lift APC as fast as possible

    · Personal wellbeing. Take time out, look after the team. Communication is key

    · Graziers – have you looked at young stock, and how do your winter crops look? Get in touch with technical field reps to discuss any concerns.

    · Make use of advice – e.g. Bank, vets, DairyNZ & feed reps. Don’t be afraid to ask – Their business depends on your success
