  • The rainfall this past week saturated some soils leading to some minor ponding. While temporary this does send signals. Take care with any effluent irrigation to choose your time and place carefully. When storms are forecast shut the irrigator down beforehand and set your stormwater diversion. Avoid irrigating those paddocks with less suitable soil types during autumn without considering the soil moisture levels already present.  Last year’s autumn showed how quickly soils can become saturated.

A reminder that the time to look at body condition score in relation to calving date has arrived. Currently this might apply to up to 10% of the herd based on individual cow condition scores. The herd average body condition score means very little at this stage.

Farm walk notes:

The improved pasture growth in late summer has allowed us to remove supplements from the system, with only grass and chicory being fed at the moment. This has significantly improved the autumn feed budget by having a higher pasture cover, and contracted PKE not used in Summer available for Autumn.
• Pasture renewal: Grass to chicory to permanent pasture. The paddocks selected were those damaged in Spring due to the wet weather, which reduced the ability to select paddocks based on pasture performance. The key for pasture renewal is early planting and establishment to ensure we get 2 grazings prior to the winter.
