The Minister announced today that he has asked the National Animal Welfare Advisory Council to review the methods used for calves and consider an amendment to the Animal Welfare (Dairy Cattle) Code of Welfare 2010.
DairyNZ’s strategy and investment leader for sustainability, Dr Rick Pridmore says DairyNZ
supports the need for greater clarity in the code requirements.
"We are keen to work with the Government to ensure robust and practical codes. We also want to work together to make sure the rules are understood by farmers," he says.
"The aim is always to minimise unnecessary suffering. Farmers using any method must be suitably trained and skilled," he says.
Executive director for DCANZ, Kimberly Crewther says the association agrees the review is timely.
She says the New Zealand dairy industry benefits from a robust, evidence-based, animal welfare framework. "It is important that opportunities are taken to review, and where necessary update our codes," she says.
