The workshops, hosted on-farm by industry body DairyNZ, will give farmers a chance to explore options that meet their goals; understand the financial implications of these options, the benefits they can expect, and the factors they need to consider. It will also provide information about good practice for cow comfort.
DairyNZ developers Helen Thoday and Kim Mashlan say the biggest benefit of BarnSmart events is that farmers can see practical examples of how others have moved to a housed cow system and why.
“These events are about helping farmers to make good decisions around cow housing. Whether farmers are looking for practical tips or advice to help them make the right choices; BarnSmart events, held at farms with barns, will offer a full range of information on cow housing topics,” says Helen.
Information will include:
- What farmers need to consider when investing in a barn.
- Sessions to help investigate costs and benefits.
- Host farmers’ questions and answers.
- Housed cow health with a local vet.
- Effluent management walk.
- Interactive cow comfort breakout sessions.
These days will provide plenty of opportunities for questions and discussion.
