If the breeding value can be developed, the project has the potential to deliver $20m to the New Zealand dairy industry annually.
The trial involves 100 bull calves (2015-born) and 300 of their half-sisters. The calves will be housed in a purpose built facility, and fed ad-lib over a six week period. During this time their feed intake will be measured.
The animals will go through the facility in two groups, and we have had a great response for the first mob of animals - collected in December 2015. We are now seeking to purchase or lease the heifers and bulls that will make up the second cohort to be measured.
How can you help?
If you’re in the North Island and have any spring 2015-born calves from the following sires, then we would like to hear from you.
- STRAVAGANZA
- DEVILLE
- MAELSTROM
- BEAMER
- WYNSOR
- LAMONT
- INCA
- ESTEEM
- HOTHOUSE
- FREEDOM
Animals would be collected in the next few weeks and those leased will be returned to you in early May.
The animals will be closely monitored and well looked after as it is fundamental to the trial that they maintain at least a normal growth pattern.
