Submissions are due on the Government’s Essential Freshwater package by October 31 and dairy farmers are encouraged to get involved by making a submission online through the Ministry for the Environment website or using DairyNZ’s submission template as a starting point.
DairyNZ strategy and investment leader Dr David Burger said the template is based on DairyNZ’s initial position on the Government’s proposals and was created in response to farmer request.
“The template provides a basis for farmers to make a submission on the Essential Freshwater Package – it’s a good starting point and can be personalised by farmers, as the real value is in them adding how it will affect them and their farm business,” said Dr Burger.
“It’s important farmers are involved in this submission process. We encourage farmers to tell their side of the story, such as what they are already doing on-farm to protect water quality or how proposed changes will personally impact them.”
Farmers can make a submission by using the DairyNZ template available at www.dairynz.co.nz/freshwater or direct to Ministry for the Environment.
DairyNZ is making a submission on behalf of dairy farmers and will be providing a summary of that technical and economic submission before October 31.
“Our water quality scientists, policy experts and economists are working hard on that detail, which includes an economic impact analysis and farmer feedback too,” said Dr Burger. “But farmer submissions are just as important – we encourage dairy farmers to get involved in the submission process and encourage all their colleagues, neighbours and dairy farmer friends to do so too.
“We only have one chance to influence the outcome and it’s through the submission process. It’s important our collective voice is heard.”
