The relaunched website, by industry body DairyNZ, has merged eight websites into one which is responsive and useable for farmers out and about on their farms.
"Over 60 percent of farmers now have smartphones and want technical farm information on the go - from their farmbikes, the tractor and in the dairy shed," says Andrew Fraser, DairyNZ brand marketing manager.
"This is one of the most comprehensive farming sites, which can now be instantly accessed and easily used on their phone. It covers everything from how to manage mastitis to getting employment contracts right for farm staff."
DairyNZ's latest dairy farmer survey indicates over 30 percent of farmers use tablets. In total, over 20 percent of the site’s traffic now comes from mobile devices, reinforcing the need for a website that adjusts its layout to the screen size it is viewed on.
"This is vital, as dairy farmers are adopting new technologies all the time and accessing information to make quick decisions on the farm. The website gives access to decades of research and tools which help find solutions or information for farm systems."
The site, dairynz.co.nz, has been one of the largest web consolidation projects in New Zealand in the last 12 months. Last year it attracted over 395,000 visits and 1.7 million page views.
Some of the new site's features are the calculators and filtering templates which have been built. This is illustrated in the Bull Search and the Cultivar Selector tools. “Making these work for both large and small screens required a total redesign of how they were presented,” says Andrew.
Along with the improved look, a key change is the site’s navigation.
"The site hosts information across every category of dairy farming. This adds complexity. So the new navigation means finding content from your smartphone or office will be more logical and intuitive."
The new dairynz.co.nz site will be featured at this year’s New Zealand National Agriculture Fieldays at Mystery Creek in Hamilton, June 11-14, at the DairyNZ site (PF16).
