The drop-in day on 14 August will cover changes proposed as part of Environment Canterbury’s Plan Change 7. The plan change may mean changes will be needed for some farms, as it introduces new minimum flows and water allocation limits. For some farmers there will be further reductions to their nitrogen losses.
The event is organised by DairyNZ, Federated Farmers, HortNZ and Opuha Water Limited, will include presentations on how the plan change may affect farmers and growers, and advice on writing your own submission.
DairyNZ head of South Island – farm performance, Tony Finch, says that, alongside all farmers, dairy farmers are playing their part to improve water quality and are working with the community to look after waterways.
“Many farmers are already doing excellent work in the environmental space, and these changes may not be significant. For some farmers, the nutrient loss targets proposed could be challenging to achieve and it is important that all farmers share their views.”
“DairyNZ is already working with farmers and supporting organisations to develop a range of practical options for farmers that will help them deliver future nitrogen loss targets,” said Mr Finch. “At this stage of the consultation process it’s important for farmers to understand how the plan change could affect them, discuss the proposal and provide feedback.”
“We encourage farmers to make their own submission to the plan change. If both farmers and the public can share their views and any additional information they have this will enable Environment Canterbury to make well informed decisions for our future.”
Under the proposed rules, farmers across the zone will have to achieve baseline Good Management Practice requirements by 1 July 2020. Farmers in the Fairlie Basin, Levels Plain and Rangitata Orton areas will also be required to make further nitrogen loss reductions of ten percent beyond this by 2030. An additional five to ten percent nitrogen loss reduction target is proposed by 2035 in these areas to improve water quality.
The drop-in day is on August 14 at Pleasant Point Rugby Clubrooms (State Highway 8). The day includes two sessions – one at 10am and at 12.30pm. There will be time to get advice on preparing your submission and input into the submissions of DairyNZ, Federated Farmers, HortNZ and Opuha Water. Lunch will be provided at 12pm.
