Training Institute: Dairy Training Limited
Qualification: National Diploma of Agribusiness Management
Background: Ashlea is a Contract Milker, who, with husband Andy, has a business operating two dairy farms and a lease block.
They operate one farm of 290 cows which Andy runs with the assistance of one employee. On the 220 cow farm they employ a Herd Manager who Ashlea supervises and assists with recruitment, training, pasture management and animal health.
On the lease block cows are grazed for clients and maize, silage and hay are cropped as well.
Reason / Benefits of completing National Diploma of Agribusiness Management:
Although Ashlea has a university degree in Human Resources, studying the diploma made sense to her because of the applicability of the diploma to their business.
“I wanted to learn all aspects of our business and progress it further. That is now happening. We are using the knowledge I am gaining from the diploma study, which I have nearly completed, to set ourselves out from the rest by securing a larger contract milking position for the new season.”
Ashlea highly recommends the diploma course because it is so helpful in learning about the true nature and operation of their business and how it can be developed and grown.
“We aim to enter the Dairy Industry Awards which will provide us with more advice and support as well as help us benchmark our business against other similar ones. Within the next five years we aim to have a 50/50 sharemilking business with a herd of 350 cows.”
