School: Trident High School
University: Massey University, Year 2, 2021
Degree: Bachelor of AgriCommerce
A gap year working on a dairy farm full time confirmed my desire to study towards an agri-commerce degree. This gave me first-hand experience in milking, feeding out, tractor work, fencing, water systems, pasture management, stock management, effluent disposal systems, track and road maintenance and fertiliser application. I have thoroughly enjoyed all these aspects.
After completing an agri-commerce degree I would like a career working with farmers to help them to achieve their farm goals. I hope to do this by working in rural professional roles such as rural banking or consulting. Longer term, I am interested and motivated to manage the day-to-day running of a dairy farm and eventually farm ownership.
The first year of the DairyNZ scholarship has offered many benefits to me and the other scholars. It provides an easy way to connect with other people in your year as well as other years which has proven to be invaluable. The scholarship also offers networking opportunities specially tailored to the field relevant to the scholars. There is also helpful mentoring between peers.
