Current employment: Contract Milking - Director Cloverlea Farms Ltd
Job description: I am currently milking 750 crossbred cows on a 202ha effective milking platform, calving half of the herd in the Autumn and half in Spring. In addition to milking the cows, we do the majority of our cropping work, planting, spraying, and mowing to keep a lot of our costs in-house. We also rear 400- 600 beef calves each year alongside our replacements for additional income.
Comments on the scholarship: The DairyNZ scholarship is a great opportunity to meet other like-minded students from all walks of life, studying similar things at university. It’s great to see the different parts of the industry that the scholars end up working, and I believe it reflects the true diversity of skills that are required in the dairy sector. The scholarship also provides opportunities to meet industry leaders at development events.
Future plans: Over the next few years I would like to push production to its maximum in all facets of our farming system - producing more milk with fewer costs, growing more grass and high yielding crops to do this. Increasing the calf rearing side of the business is also a way I would like to diversify the system, bringing income to the business which is not typically as volatile as the milk payout.
