Current employment: Farm Assistant on a DairyNZ research farm
Job description: I am a farm assistant on Scott Farm, a DairyNZ research farm. I work alongside the rest of the farm team to perform the day-to-day operations, including milking, farm maintenance and animal health monitoring. I get the chance to learn and practice technical skills like blood sampling animals. I also get to help the tech team with trials requiring “lots of hands on deck.” There are opportunities to continue further study while working.
Comments on the scholarship: The scholarship was hugely beneficial in so many ways, besides the financial support it provided. The scholarship program was a way to meet and get to know like-minded people across the years at university. The guest speakers at the dinners exposed me to all kinds of jobs I did not even know existed (and the delicious buffet dinners themselves were a highlight each year.) A very valuable part of the scholarship for me was the mentoring support, where help was always available no matter the issue.
Future plans: I am currently at the beginning of a two-year fixed-term contract. While I am in this position, I want to seize as many opportunities as I can to learn new skills, improve my understanding of farm systems and trial work, and see new things. I will wait and see what is in store after the two years.
