Growing up on dairy farms I developed a passion for farming from a young age. I have 6 years of dairy experience where I have learnt a wide range of skills from calving and mating to pasture management and animal health.
In 2019 I decided to re-educate myself and go to university. I decided on a Bachelor of Agriculture at Lincoln University to give myself a solid academic platform to further my career in the dairy sector. I have enjoyed my studies so far with a focus in the soil and animal sciences. Currently I am working on a dairy farm on the weekends and during the holidays which gives me a good study/work balance. I really enjoy my time on the farm.
Post university I either plan to work on farm, working towards share milking or an equity partnership, other options be a working in a professional role such as a fertiliser rep or as farm advisor. DairyNZ also has a range of options and I will focus on narrowing down these options over the next year, one thing for sure is there is plenty of opportunity for skilled graduates within the dairy sector.
The DairyNZ scholarship has been very helpful to complement my studies. The mentoring and support we gain from the one on one interviews, workshops and industry dinners is priceless. I have already learnt so much and met some great contacts. The support and networking between other DairyNZ scholars have been hugely beneficial to my studies.
