Name: Heather Langley
Training Institute: Dairy Training Limited
Qualification: Studying for the New Zealand Diploma of Agribusiness Management
Background: In her sixth year with husband Kelvin in a Contract Milking business, no one is more surprised than Heather that she has enthusiastically embraced the dairy farming lifestyle.
"Although I grew up on a dairy farm, I was never involved or engaged in farming until I met Kelvin who was a farm manager at the time. I had studied for an Art History degree with Honours and was all set for a career in that field.
"Now I am fully immersed in the businesses we own – a 380 cow farm and a 900 cow farm that I help manage in my role as Administrator.
"I am also the mother of two young children, so life is hectic but fun-filled," says Heather.
Reasons/benefits of completing the New Zealand Diploma of Agribusiness Management: Enrolling in the diploma which Heather is part way through completing, has been of great value to her personally and to their business.
"I needed more knowledge about financial management because trial and error is not an efficient way to learn. We want to continue to grow our business, look for further opportunities and to do these things we have to be great operators on farm and in how we manage our business.
"The diploma course is just what I need for my growth and development as a dairy farmer," says Heather.
Future goals: "We are working our way into an equity partnership over the next few years and this has been possible through the skills, knowledge and confidence that I have gained already through my diploma studies," Heather concludes as she embraces her career in dairy farming.
