School: Morrinsville College
University: Massey University, Year 3, 2022
Degree: Bachelor of Science
I decided to combine my interest in science, sustainability and agriculture and study a Bachelor of Science majoring in Environmental Science at Massey University. During my first year of university study, I enjoyed learning about soil science and sustainable planning approaches in the New Zealand context, as well as earth processes and weather systems.
The support from my DairyNZ student mentors was particularly valuable in 2020 amongst the challenges of finding my feet as a first-year student, as well as coping with the disruption caused by Covid-19. Being able to reach out to someone and receive guidance regarding my studies as well as general student life helped me feel supported in the transition from high school to tertiary study. The networking opportunities provided at DairyNZ events have introduced me to other students from a range of study levels as well as inspirational industry professionals.
Reading the Dairy Environment Leaders programme information on the DairyNZ website, I was inspired by the statement “Our dairy environment leaders are brave and will stand up and lead change.” In the future, I could see myself working to solve environmental problems as an environmental scientist or consultant so that one day I can support these dairy leaders to make a difference not just within the New Zealand dairy sector, but globally as world leaders.
