School: Tauranga Boys' College
University: Massey University, Year 2, 2021
Degree: Bachelor of Agricultural Science
In 2019 I did some work experience on a dairy farm during the weekends and holidays where I assisted with milking 600 cows and helped with calving and rearing calves. I drove various types of machinery to make hay and silage and was taught about soil and pasture as well as assisting with farm maintenance and helping to design and install an effluent system. This work experience gave me insight into the amount of work, determination, intelligence, passion and mental strength is required to be a dairy farmer.
In 2020 I finished my first year studying Agricultural Science at Massey Uni and absolutely loved it. The learning is transferring directly into farming practice and is moving me closer to my future goal. With many visits from the DairyNZ team helping us along the way, one thing that I really enjoyed was the mentoring program. This is where I was peered up with two older students who have already been in my shoes, they were there to ask questions when stuck and guide me through the year.
My goal is to become a farm business owner and create a positive profile for New Zealand dairy farmers by contributing in every way I can to the social, environmental and economic aspects of farming.
Attending Massey University to complete an agriculture science degree is something I am very excited about.
